Meet Estée Lauder's "New Girl" - Anok Yai
Posted on 27 September 2018
As a part of our September 'New Girl' ONYXBOX, we want to introduce you to Estée Lauder's newest spokeswoman, Anok Yai. After being discovered on the yard at Howard Homecoming last year, Anok Yai has achieved what most models aspire for their whole career including becoming the second black woman to open a Prada show. We had the pleasure to interview Anok on her Estée beauty routine and what’s in her runaway prep bag!
“ To be a woman of color representing an iconic brand that has continuously been at the forefront of beauty, is an honor. I hope this encourages young girls and women and to feel undeniably beautiful.”
- Anok Yai
ONYX: Congratulations on becoming an Estée Lauder spokeswoman. What does this title mean to you?
Anok Yai: It’s a dream come true. It’s such a well-respected brand and I’m in the company of so many other great models. Seeing Joan Smalls included as a face inspired me, and now knowing I can work with her and with the entire Estée Lauder team is surreal. Grace Elizabeth and I are close friends as well so it’s been great working together.

ONYX: We are thrilled that Estée Lauder has extended their Double Wear Stay-In-Place Foundation to 56 shades! Previously how was your foundation matching experience? How did it make you feel?
AY: In the past I could never find the right shade. Walking into any store, there would be so many lighter shades, and then maybe three options for black women. But black is a very broad spectrum! It makes me happy that Estée Lauder makes it a point to address all women of all shades. Just finding one would be great, but Estée Lauder actually has two options that can work for me.
ONYX: Before the age of 21, you have achieved what most models aspire for their entire career. How do you remain focused and motivated?
AY: Since my photo went up on Instagram my life has been a whirlwind. I am extremely focused on my career and succeeding so I do everything in my power to remain motivated. My family also keeps me very focused and knowing I can put my siblings through college makes me want to work even harder. I check in with them a lot.
ONYX: Howard Homecoming helped kickstart your career. Any plans to return to the yard?
AY: Yes! I'm actually trying to attend this year’s homecoming. Hopefully my schedule lines up.
ONYX: What's in your runway prep bag?
AY: I always carry Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation, Pure Color Envy Lash Multi Effects Mascara, headphones, a few of Estée Lauder's Advanced Night Repair eye masks and lipgloss.
ONYX: What's a new beauty step you've added to your routine since becoming a model?
AY: I rub Vaseline on my eyelashes every night and use Advanced Night Repair Serum twice a day. The serum is basically my go-to.
ONYX: Never skip _________. (Asking her what beauty/wellness step she doesn't skip, i.e. sunscreen, leg day, multi-vitamin)
AY: I never skip working out, drinking water, exfoliating.
